PARISH ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2024
3
Dear Parishioners,
Warmest greetings in the precious
name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let's
thank God for the joyous month of July
and welcome August. We had a beauti-
ful time at the Family Conference in
Arizona , and the Sunday School Con-
ference at St. Johns University. I praise
and thank God for making our VBS a
blessed one and I pray that let this VBS
be an inspiration for our kids to live as
Jesus’ witness and God will help our
children to stand firm on the rock that is
Christ in a world that can slip and fall. I
appreciate teachers volunteers conveners and all who worked hard
behind our VBS. I appreciate your participation in in-person meet-
ings and opening the door for fellowship gatherings. I request regu-
lar participation for the same.
God willing we will have our parish picnic on the 17th of this month
and hoping that you all will attend. Our Church reflects the theme of
‘reformation’ this month. May God help us to remain firm in the
principles of reformation and maintain its good tradition and legacy.
August 1-15 the church observes as fifteen days lent, meditating the
life of Virgin Mary. May Lord help us to submit ourselves as Mary
submitted herself before the Lord.
The first Sunday we observe as Mission Sunday, we must have a
clear sense of the mission God has given us and be dedicated. Sec-
ond Sunday we meditate on Freedom in Jesus Christ: It's reminds us
to self-control and be submissive to Jesus's teachings. Third Sunday
we meditative upon Reformation based on values of the Kingdom of
God. There must be reformation in our personal life, social life, and
spiritual life at all times in a way that is based on values of Kingdom
of God .

Youth Chaplain’s Message
In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit - One True God.
Amen
Dearly Beloved,
In Luke 10:1-12, we encounter a profound portrayal of Christian mis-
sion as both a participatory and defenseless activity. Fundamentally,
Christian mission entails participation in the divine mission aimed at
realizing the Kingdom of God. The objective is to disentangle indi-
viduals from all forms of oppression, reflecting the redemptive work
of God in Jesus Christ. In this passage, Jesus dispatches disciples
to prepare the way for Him, offering a new strategic framework for
mission.
Firstly, mission is portrayed as a participatory endeavor. Jesus com-
missions seventy disciples in addition to the already selected
twelve. Scholars often highlight that the number seventy holds sig-
nificant weight in Jewish tradition, symbolizing completeness or the
representation of all nations. In verse 1, Jesus sends these seventy
individuals in pairs, underscoring the importance of mutual support
and collaborative mission work. This mission is inherently commu-
nal, requiring the collective effort of all participants without discrimi-
nation. The text underscores that there is no exclusion based on
gender, caste, or other social divisions. Verse 2 emphasizes that
"the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few," suggesting that
the success of the mission relies on the cooperation and dedicated
effort of the disciples.
Secondly, the mission is characterized by a nearly defenseless spir-
it. In verse 3, Jesus states, "I am sending you out like lambs into the
midst of wolves." This metaphor illustrates a form of discipleship
that is vulnerable and sent into potentially life-threatening and hos-
tile environments. The wolf symbolizes entities that seek to under-
mine and challenge the faith of the disciples, representing a culture
of violence and aggression. In contrast, the lamb symbolizes a
counter-culture that eschews defensive tactics. The lamb epitomizes
a vulnerable missionary community committed to proclaiming libera-
tion and enlightenment, even in the face of opposition. This requires
immense courage and faith in God, inspiring us to confront challeng-
es with the same spirit, knowing the great Shepherd is always with
us.

Youth Chaplain’s Message (Contd)
As we reflect on this passage, we must consider: Are we engaging
in God's mission activity with the vulnerability of lambs among
wolves? Are we prepared to undertake a mission that necessitates
reliance on divine protection and guidance? Let us remember that
we are not alone in this mission. We have the Almighty's protection
and guidance, which should reassure us and give us the strength to
commit to a mission that is both participatory and defenseless.
God willing, in a couple of months, we will again embark on mission
outreach projects with the Northeast Regional Youth Fellowship. I
hope that all young adults, teens, and children will be able to attend
and participate. By adopting the mission strategy delineated by Je-
sus, we can collaborate without discrimination and confront opposi-
tion with the courage and faith of a lamb among wolves.
Once again, I remind all that the Youth Chaplain’s Parsonage is a
place of warmth and hospitality, open to all Youth Fellowship (YF)
and Young Family Fellowship (YFF). Whether your YF or YFF
needs a listening ear, a moment of prayer, or just a friendly chat
over coffee, please feel free to visit anytime. I believe in the im-
portance of our responsible Christian fellowship and being there es-
pecially for all of our youths. Please do call before you come, so I
can possibly get some snacks in time. Thank you.
God be with you all,
JVarghese Achen +

Reformation Movement
Palakkunnathu Abraham Malpan from Maramon and Kaithayil Geevarghe-
se Malpan from Kottayam who spearheaded this movement, never want-
ed to start a separate Church. They wanted the reformation, staying with-
in the Church. This group gradually became vocal and approached Col.
Fraser, the British Resident, with a memorandum in 1836 . But since noth-
ing came of it, Abraham Malpan decided to take action in his own parish
of Maramon which was sympathetic towards his ideas of reform. He trans-
lated the liturgy of the Holy Qurbana into local language Malayalam from
Syriac and also eliminated from it the prayers for the dead and invocation
of saints etc. He celebrated Holy Qurbana in his church using the revised
St.James liturgy on a Sunday in 1836. This was tantamount to firing the
first shot of the reformation. He later on removed from the church the
wooden image of a saint reputed to have miraculous powers, and in
whose honor an annual festival was held that brought in huge income to
the Parish. Both at Maramon and at the Syrian Seminary at Kottayam, and
in the neighboring Parishes of Pallom and Kollad, Abraham Malpan popu-
larized Bible teaching and preaching. Abraham Malpan and Geevarghese
Malpan had to give up their service in the Seminary, in 1840. Since then
Abraham Malpan concentrated his attention on the work of reform, hold-
ing Bible classes and prayer meetings and instructing the deacons who
were loyal to him.
Most prominent elements in the Reformation were:
· Return to the gospel message of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ;
· Cleansing of wrong ways of life, and
· Taking up responsibility to be witnesses of Jesus Christ to other
· All importance be given to the primacy of the Word of God
8
Reformation Movement (Contd)
Thus the reformation movement was started. It was a return
to the purity of the life and practice of the early Church. The
emphasis on preaching the word of God led to revival meet-
ings, which were led both by the clergy and laymen. The domi-
nation of the clergy as custodians of grace became a thing of
the past. Emphasis was given to the sole mediation of Christ,
importance of laity and priesthood of all believers. More and
more groups were formed for Bible study; and conventions for
preaching and hearing the Word of God became common.
Metropolitan Chepat Mar Dionysius was not prepared to ac-
cept such changes. So he refused to ordain the deacons who
had undergone training with Abraham Malpan. He also excom-
municated Abraham Malpan. So Abraham Malpan went to his
mother-parish at Maramon. He stood strong in faith and con-
victions when faced with serious challenges and great difficul-
ties. However the whole parish stood with him. Others who
favoured the reforms went to hear his preaching and were
strengthened by his exhortations. Some other parishes also
decided to adopt the programme of reformation. Abraham
Malpan realized that unless he had the support of a bishop
who was sympathetic towards his reforms, there was little
prospect of the movement gaining ground. of the Church.
